Tianlu (天禄), also referred to as Pipi (皮皮), is the protagonist of You Shou Yan. He is a Pixiu, a first-generation mythic beast, and a younger brother to Bixie.
Appearance
Tianlu is a mostly white-furred Pixiu with blue accents and tail. He has a singular golden horn on the top of his head, along with emerald green eyes and red paw beans.
On his arms are two large blue dashes, and on his thigh are two circles of blue – one inside the other. He has a blue marking on the form of a dot on both ears, and cloud-shaped blue tufts of fur on his head. These, interestingly, have been shown to be removable by Tianlu at any point with no harm to the Pixiu. His golden horn has two peaks which are ususally dull in his small form.
His large form is much more physically imposing, losing the babyish cuteness through much more defined lines and more realistic proportions. His markings do not change at all in this version.
Personality
Present Day
Tianlu, in the present, is hot-headed and rebellious to say the least. With a streak of property destruction and a ruling paw over the lands around Luren Dian, he confidently asserts himself as the guardian and controller of the local territory. He is, however, remarkably easy to befriend through simple kindness.
Despite this, he lives a simple life with few to no greater asperations – other than paying off the damages he caused to Sibuxiang early on in the series.
He holds very child-like and near-sighted opinions on other people, and does not hide his distaste or dissatisfaction with one’s company.
Ancient Times
History
(Copied from Bixie’s wiki page by writer [VBixie]. This will be edited to Tianlu’s history when VBixie has more time.)
Before the Split of Heaven and Earth
Bixie and Tianlu were born with Heaven as their father and the Earth as their mother. This was long before humans, in a time when there were ten suns in the sky and the world was filled with mythical beasts. Bixie breaks from the egg moments before Tianlu, and hence takes the responsibility and the destiny of being the older brother.
The two survive the ancient world together, roaming from hill to hill in search of once-plentiful gold. Whilst Tianlu can eat anything, Bixie has a better digestion and thus prefers to only eat evil spirits. Bixie would commonly go out to hunt for Tianlu, even getting hurt in the process. Life would continue on for the two as such until Tianlu met Dijiang and adopted her as part of the family. Whilst originally opposed to Dijiang’s addition, Bixie would settle down and the three would live as a family. Dijiang would provide transport and warmth for the two Pixiu, whilst also requiring no extra hunting on Bixie’s part. It would continue as this until Dijiang found Hundun and the three became four.
When their home broke in one of the many frequent earthquakes, Hundun would create a new home for them in the form of a paw-shaped cavern. Bixie ate all the evil spirits on the hill in order to keep the other three safe. Whilst not exactly the Yunnan mountains, this hill sits where they would come to be. Life continued as such for the four until Tianlu stole one of the three-legged crows that sat in the sky as a source of photosynthesis for Dijiang.
Life began to change when the remaining nine three-legged crows were shot out of the sky and the world plunged into a deep winter. Tianlu and Bixie would find fireflies for Dijiang, stockpiling food for all of them in case the winter got worse. This stockpile would however be raided by two of the Four Perils, though not yet named. This is Bixie’s first run-in with them. Not long after, Dijiang sacrificed herself by releasing the captured three-legged crow back out into the sky in a last attempt to end the winter to return the warmth to the world.
Whilst the winter would end, Dijiang would end up succumbing to the lack of sunlight and Hundun was severely injured trying to fly to the last remaining three-legged crow out of grief – despite the Pixiu brothers’ cries telling her not to. Tianlu and Bixie settle down and hibernate beneath Dijiang’s body, and they are covered in land.
Ancient Times
They wake up an unknown amount of time later. During their hibernation, humans appeared and the world split from the Heavens. Bixie would plant the tree that grows into the tree that sits atop the hill near Luren Dian as a marker to find Dijiang again. The two would set begin a search for Hundun that lead to them encountering humans for the first time, and splitting up when Tianlu fell down a ravine and Bixie was too late to follow him.
Bixie, attempting to follow his brother, would slip and fall down the same ravine but was saved by Sibuxiang appearing and saving him from falling. Sibuxiang would name Bixie “Little Plum-Blossom” for the marking on his side. Whilst Sibuxiang was originally happy to leave Tianlu and take Bixie as his new brother, Bixie would insist to find Tianlu at the price of being Sibuxiang’s brother for at least five hundred years. The two venture into the ravine, meeting the Talking Tree Spirit, who directs them towards Tianlu.
Sibuxiang would return to his parents where they find Tianlu already adopted as a brother for him. The two pixiu greet eagerly, vowing to never be separated again. They then commence on a journey to find Hundun with Sibuxiang’s aid, using the Qilin as a mount to help them search the land. During this time, they cross an ocean and enter a desert where Sibuxiang’s cloud dissipates and he drops unconscious from lack of cloud dew to feed on. Bixie and Tianlu take turns carrying their Qilin brother, but Bixie would resort to letting Sibuxiang drink his blood as a last effort to keep him alive. This worked, letting Sibuxiang live long enough for them to make it back to forests where he could drink cloud dew once more.
They finally find Hundun at the tree that Bixie planted, digging to find Dijiang once more. When Dijiang’s spirit returned to Heaven and Hundun transformed into the Yunnan Mountains, the remaining of the Four Perils would enter combat with the Pixius – leading to Bixie’s ear wound and the Four Perils fleeing before soon splitting up.
Despite Sibuxiang’s best efforts, Bixie and Tianlu would remain at the Yunnan Mountain ranges to mourn their lost family. Sibuxiang resorted to finding and gathering food for his adopted brothers, before being visited by the Golden Man. Not long after, the Pixiu brothers would set off once more with Sibuxiang their mount. Due to their limited food, and Tianlu’s pickiness, Bixie would pretend to eat the golden balls before spitting them back out so Tianlu could eat them later. This, however, would lead to Bixie growing ill and weak due to the lack of food and amount of cursed spirits in his belly.
Tianlu and Sibuxiang would leave Bixie in his parent’s care, before going to find stronger food for Bixie to eat. It is presumed that he recovered from this, though his mental state is unknown afterwards. He would follow Sibuxiang and Tianlu in their ascent to Heaven on the Golden Man’s word, where something would happen to him.
For currently unknown reasons, Bixie enters a fight with (and kills) Sibuxiang – drawing the wrath of Heaven. Tianlu and Bixie would fall from Heaven, locked in combat, and the fate of Bixie in this fight is unknown. It is presumed he was eaten, both as a way to hide him and protect him from Heaven, whilst Tianlu had his memories stripped from him and was put under guard with Sibuxiang his watchman.
Modern Day
Bixie remains in Tianlu’s stomach for the entire time that Tianlu was being worshipped – and on the run from – humans. When Tianlu is sent to Luren Dian, Bixie recruits the chickens he ate as henchmen. Bixie would use these chickens to help keep Tianlu’s stomach clean and his digestion in order. When Tianlu sleeps, Bixie would jump from his stomach and get rid of the trash that had accumulated since the last time he came out.
Tianlu stays blissfully unaware of his brother until the two meet when Tianlu wakes up just before Bixie returns to his stomach. The two engage in the “Mirror Game”, a game from before Ancient Times, but Tianlu simply dismisses it as the mirror game and doesn’t react to the ramifications of the other Pixiu’s existence. He falls back to sleep again, and Bixie returns to Tianlu’s stomach once more despite being seen by several members of the Luren Dian group – notably Hetao and Tubaoshu.
The two met once more as Tianlu wakes up with Bixie’s paw in his mouth. Whilst Bixie tries to tell his brother that he needs to stop eating so much trash, Tianlu is infuriated that someone had the indecency to put their foot in his mouth. Upon further questioning, Tianlu pronounces himself the only Pixiu – having forgotten about Bixie – which draws his brother’s ire. Sibuxiang, awake for the entire confrontation, knocks Tianlu out before being taken to his stomach where Bixie interrogates the deer. Sibuxiang takes off his mask for Bixie, likely being the event that broke the disguise of the mask for the Pixiu. Bixie pronounces his hatred for Heaven for what it has done to Tianlu, before ejecting Sibuxiang back to his room.
The two Pixiu would begin to regularly meet up under the guise of being friends instead of brothers. The two get on extremely well, and Bixie starts attempting to bring back Tianlu’s memories – first through familiar locations and then paintings. Through exploitation of Tianlu’s friends, Bixie begins to uncover the truth as to what happened to his Qilin brother. He resorts to painting murals on cave walls, before using Huajiao as a reference to recreate the Qilin. He takes two members of the Luren Dian community as paint brushes (Pang Langshen and Yongye) , and keeps Shota and Maki with him as prisoners to stop them reporting his existence to Heaven. Using Shota’s laptop, they attempt to reverse image search the Qilin but get blocked by Heaven before getting stuck in their cave due to a Heavenly Tribulation.
During this time, he brings the rest of the Four Perils back together as allies for an eventual war against Heaven. He has not yet met Tianlu with his memories returned, though the two are looking for each other.
